Pakistan EC turns down Bhuttos demands

bhutto-pakistan-general-election-jumptv-asia

Former Pakistan Prime Minister and Pakistan People’s Party chairperson Benazir Bhutto’s demand for handing over election arrangements to the Army has been turned down by the Election Commission of Pakistan. Kanwar Muhammad Khan Dilshad, the secretary of Election Commission said, “The commission was not considering handing over election supervision to the Army.” Earlier Ms Bhutto had said that for the supervision of polls her party would not accept deployment of volunteers and that Army should be called to conduct the Pakistan general elections 2008 if police strength wasn’t sufficient. Mr Dilshad said that a list of normal, sensitive and very sensitive polling stations would be announced on Dec 26 by the EC and that at ‘very sensitive’ stations Pakistan Army might be deputed. Bhutto’s recent demand is given great importance by the election observers as all opposition parties including the PPP have been opposing any role of the Army in conducting the elections in the past.

Dont indulge in politics- Bhutto asks intelligence agencies

During her election campaign in Dera Allah Yar, former premier and PPP leader Benazir Bhutto urged intelligence agencies to concentrate on capturing terrorists instead of indulging in politics. She told the intelligence agencies that “It is not your job to indulge in politics” and alleged that the use of intelligence agencies for political purposes had worsened the situation of the country. While talking to media Bhutto said that she had evidences of involvement of intelligence agencies in electoral process and said “We demand that the Election Commission take notice of such things to ensure free and fair elections.” She also wanted Government to act against those involved in poll rigging. Benazir also accused local Nazims of gearing up to cheat. She vowed that if she was voted to power, then she would put an end to army operations in Balochistan and would readdress the grievances of the provinces. Addressing a public meeting at Jacobabad, she promised to end miseries of masses by providing employment. She also highlighted her father Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s sacrifice of his life for principles. She also stressed the importance of law and order for country’s development and added that judges cannot provide justice if they are not allowed to do so.

Rice asks Musharraf to ensure free & fair Pakistan general election campaign

The Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf’s decision to end emergency rule was welcomed by United States, but said Musharraf had more to do to ensure that the Pakistan general election 2007-2008 which is scheduled to be held on January 8 are free and fair. The US spokeswoman Dana Perino said, "It was good to see President Musharraf follow through on his pledge to lift that state of emergency. Now that they move forward, towards the election season, it's very important that the opposition parties, and everybody, have access to a free media so that they can have a free and fair election." The US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice asked Musharraf to make “a very robust and concerted effort” to ensure free and fair election campaign. "And that means that the opposition has to be able to gather and mobilize and has to have access to the press, If there are real efforts that are made to make sure that the opposition can act on its own behalf... then this can be an election that can move Pakistan forward on the democratic road," said Rice.

Musharraf rejects the possibility of reinstating deposed CJ Chaudhry

The Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf ruled out any chances of reinstating deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry and several other judges of the Supreme Court saying, as Pakistan already have a Chief Justice there was no room for Mr Chaudhry. “The Chief Justice of Pakistan is Abdul Hameed Dogar now, and he remains there, and there are judges in the Supreme Court, they are the judges of the Supreme Court and the high courts. Nobody is being allowed to go back," Musharraf said.

Musharraf defended his imposition of emergency in Pakistan by saying, “What was happening was that the complete executive machinery was in near paralysis. The law-enforcement agencies were totally demoralised – and they were not acting. The supremacy of the parliament was totally violated in that they gave me 57 per cent vote and yet they were not allowed to go through with their decision.”
